KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan hopes to be able to set up a furniture city in Sarawak this year.

“At the moment, we are looking for the right location and we have been in contact with many groups to discuss how we are going to create a furniture city,” he said.

He added that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg had agreed to let Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) lead the endeavour.

He said this at a press conference held after the STIDC Special Gathering 2020 at Wisma Sumber Alam, Petra Jaya here yesterday.

According to Awang Tengah, who is also STIDC Board of Management chairman, many investors, especially those from Singapore were excited about the idea.

“To sustain the timber industry, we must go for high value-added products such as furniture,” he emphasised.

During the STIDC Special Gathering 2020, Awang Tengah inked the STIDC Strategy Map 2020 and STIDC Integrity Policy.

Also present were Assistant Minister of International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, Assistant Minister of Urban Development and Resources Datuk Len Talif Salleh, and STIDC general manager Hashim Bojet.
